Protective effects of Majun Brahmi on aluminium-induced cognitive impairment in rats: Biochemical and behavioral changes

Background: The Unani formulation Majun Brahmi (MB), a combination of herbs, is used in India as brain tonic and memory enhancer. Aluminium deposition the associated with development neurodegenerative diseases. Aims Objectives: present study was designed to observe that effects MB have been evaluated on aluminium trichlorideor chloride (AlCl3)-induced cognitive impairment an experimental rat model. Materials Methods: Twenty male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups five each. AlCl3 administered orally for 30 days induce impairment. Group I received saline, II-AlCl3 (100 mg/kg b.wt), III-MB (1027.77 IV-AlCl3 + b.wt+1027.77 b.wt). At end experiment, subjected behavioral biochemical assessments. Results: Animals treated showed significant increase time reach platform Morris water maze test (MWM), prolonged transfer latency (TL) elevated plus maze, decreased step-down passive avoidance test, compared controls (P<0.01). Cotreatment resulted reduced MWM, increased latencies, TL. induction significantly malondialdehyde superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, glutathione, total antioxidant capacity, catalase levels. Concomitant administration attenuated lipid peroxidation restored parameters. Conclusion: provides strong evidence potential use treatment disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.
